Charcoal, 14 x 17."  2010. Inspired by Roger Neve's photo for O.

In addition to my other work I accept commissions for portraits of people, pets, homes and anything else you might think of!
I'm located in Charleston, SC., but if you would like to arrange a long-distance portrait simply send me a digital image, pay with PayPal, and I will mail you the finished product. Please contact me for prices, styles and options. I also do portrait sketches and murals around Charleston as well as for events. I sketch portraits occasionally at 86 Market Arts Gallery and every Saturday at the Farmer's Market in Marion Square from 8am-2pm (across from Coco's Doughnuts).

How it works:
I can work from a photograph or you can sit for a portrait or a do a combination of both. Before beginning I'll discuss with you what style and colors you are interested in, what materials (such as canvas or paper, watercolor or oil paint), the size and the deadline, then I'll put it in writing and begin. Half of the price is due at the time of the contract for pieces over $60; the rest is due upon receipt of the portrait. I accept either check or cash in person, or PayPal.
If you come in to 86 Market Arts Gallery or the Farmer's Market, on the other hand, I'll be there doing 14 x 17" sketches in charcoal that take 25-30 minutes for one person and 40-50 minutes for two people together in one portrait. One person (or pet) is $40 and two together are $60.
I accept cash or check. To keep the drawing from smearing after you get it home either place it behind glass or spray it with spray-fixative, which is available from any art store. Very many of my subjects are kids and pets, so keep in mind that they don't have to sit perfectly still to get a great portrait!

Charcoal on paper, 14 x 17." 2010. This drawing was inspired a photograph for Chico's.

Charcoal on paper, 14" x 17." 2010. This was drawn from two separate photographs. As long as the lighting is similar I can usually put several people together in one portrait from different photos.

Watercolors

Watercolor on paper, 11 x 14." 2009. Painted from a photograph.

India ink, 11 x 14." 2010. Painted from a photograph.

Watercolor on paper, 18" x 24."  2006.
This watercolor sketch was completed from life, not a photograph.  The sitter did what he loved best-- fiddling around on the computer-- while I painted this.  It took around 2-3 hours and a similar portrait would cost about $100-150.

Detail, watercolor on paper.  Section shown 12" x 24."  2006.
This was painted from a photograph and took longer to comlete since it was quite detailed.  The entire piece (28" x 28") took around 30-40 hours to complete, about same time as an oil portrait.  A similar portrait would cost about $350-$500.

Oil and Acrylic Paintings

Oil on Canvas, 24" x 30."  2005.
This piece was painted from a photograph and a
different background was added.  It took a total of around 35-40 hours to complete
(around 5 days) and a similar portrait would cost approximately $350-600, depending on time, materials, and other factors.

Acrylic on paper, 22" x 30."  2008.
This portrait is painted from a photograph and I have included it to demonstrate the process.  The photo below is a great example of the light and shadow areas that make for a descriptive painting.  Because of the size, medium and time spent a similar portrait would be about $500-900.

Oil on canvas, 18" x 24." 2003, unfinished. Self portrait in progress, painted from life.
